"Gears of War": Microsoft announces remaster of the first part

After "Oblivion", Microsoft has presented another remaster of a classic game within a short space of time: "Gears of War: Reloaded" is a new edition of the first part of the shooter series. "Reloaded" will be released on August 26 for PC, Xbox Series X/S and, for the first time, Playstation 5.

In contrast to "Oblivion Remastered", the remaster of "Gears of War: Reloaded" is a little less ambitious. This means: the resolution has been improved, the FPS increased, HDR support and surround audio added. The game now also runs in Unreal Engine 5, so these are primarily technical improvements and no gameplay changes are to be expected. In the remaster of "Oblivion", Microsoft went a little further out on a limb and revised the level system and melee combat, among other things.

The technical facelift should still come in handy for fans of the shooter series. Especially as there are also some comfort improvements: For example, Microsoft has completely eliminated loading times during the campaign in the remastered version. Cross-play has also been introduced for the multiplayer mode – so Xbox gamers can play together with Playstation players. Thanks to cross-progression, game progress is saved across platforms.

Some owners get the new version for free

An important difference to the remaster of "Oblivion": Those who already own the Ultimate Edition of "Gears of War" digitally will receive the upgrade to "Gears of War: Reloaded" free of charge. There was no such preferential treatment for long-established fans with "Oblivion".

Meanwhile, it is still unclear how much "Gears of War: Reloaded" will cost in Germany. The US version is expected to cost 40 US dollars, well below the full-price level of modern triple-A video games. The prices are still missing from the German announcement. It is likely to cost between 40 and 50 euros. If you don't want to pay that, you can alternatively play "Gears of War: Reloaded" via the Game Pass game subscription.

"Gears of War" is the first part of Microsoft's popular third-person shooter series "Gears of War". The title was developed by Epic Games and was launched in 2006 – exclusively for Xbox and PC.
