Take a deep breath: LG's stretchable display
Only with a panel that can be stretched in all directions can any curved surface be created. LG is presenting such a display at Display Week.
Screens are normally flat or at best curved, they fit around pillars or roll into boxes. However, only a display that can be stretched in all directions can nestle against any curved or multi-curved surface. LG is presenting such a stretchable screen for installation in cars at Display Week next week.
The screen measures 30.5 centimeters diagonally (12 inches) when unstretched and is touch-sensitive, meaning it reacts to touch inputs. It consists of two plastic substrates laminated to a stretchable carrier at the front and back. Tiny red, green and blue micro-LEDs sit on top.

)The aim was to develop a display that could be stretched by 20 percent, the LG researchers report, and the result is a panel that can be stretched by up to 50 percent in all directions. LG puts the resolution at 100 dpi, which roughly corresponds to a resolution of 960 Ă— 720 pixels for a 12-inch display. To achieve this, over two million tiny RGB LEDs would have to be accommodated on the small surface.

Tactile buttons in the car
In a video, the display specialist shows the center console in a car as a possible area of application: it is flat, but as soon as you touch it, the display curves upwards and a tactile rotary knob is created. This can then be used to control the air conditioning, for example, with swiping movements. Such tactile instrument knobs are also required by the consumer protection organization Euro NCAP, because if you can only adjust settings by looking at the display from the road, this is distracting and increases the risk of accidents.

LG Display has not yet said anything about availability and costs. However, the developers state that the micro-LED panel has survived 10,000 stretches at a 20 percent strain rate without damage in tests. This would mean, for example, that a driver could adjust the air conditioning for five years with four touches per journey to and from work. This will not be sufficient for use in cars.
However, the objects shown at Display Week are not yet final products, but current developments that could end up in products in the coming years. LG has definitely taken a big step forward with the 1.5x stretch, as the stretchable displays shown at Display Week in previous years were only recognizable as such on closer inspection. (uk)
