Jeep Compass also comes as a hybrid, electric car or PHEV with all-wheel drive

The brand from the USA has not had an easy time so far under the leadership of Stellantis. In 2024, it only sold 132,000 cars in Europe, around 80,000 of which were Jeep Avengers, which only carries the tradition in its name. Now the Compass is set to help boost sagging sales. Like the Peugeot 3008 and 5008, Opel Grandland (test) or Citroën C5 Aircross, it uses the STLA Medium technical basis and adds an electrically driven rear axle for the all-wheel drive versions planned from 2026. The compact SUV in the C-segment is 8.5 cm wider at 1.9 m and 15 cm longer at 4.55 m. The wheelbase, which has been extended to just under 2.8 m, should provide 5.5 cm more legroom in the second row, while the manufacturer gives the load space as 550 liters. In terms of dimensions, this brings it close to the popular VW Tiguan.

Some of the data already reveals that it will look more like an off-road vehicle than be one. The manufacturer boasts a front slope angle of up to 20 degrees, a rear slope angle of 28 degrees and a ramp angle of 15 degrees. Maximum ground clearance and fording depth are 200 and 408 mm respectively. However, the rim sizes of 18, 19 and 20 inches already show that off-road capability is not very good, because such large rims only allow tires with a low sidewall height, which are far too vulnerable off the asphalt. For good reasons, off-road tires are not available in these dimensions. In the catalog, this is called a "bold look".

Initially, the Jeep Compass is only available with front-wheel drive, versions with all-wheel drive are to come later and with hill descent control as standard. As is usual with Stellantis across most model series, a 1.2-liter three-cylinder is available as the basis, which as a mild hybrid with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission and 0.9 kWh battery achieves a combined output of up to 107 kW, of which 21 kW comes from the electric motor. The front-wheel drive battery-electric version, also available from the fall, with 157 kW of power and a maximum force of 345 Nm is expected to offer a range of around 500 km with its 74 kWh net battery.

With a 96-kWh battery announced for a later date, the electric drive has an output of 170 kW and is specified with a standard range of 660 km. A battery-electric all-wheel-drive version with 157 kW at the front and 132 kW at the rear axle, which will then also be available, will be able to travel up to 600 km on one charge of the 96 kWh and achieve a maximum charging capacity of 160 kW. It will be available to order from the fall.

Charging power up to 160 kW

A 22 kW charger and a heat pump will be offered as options. The manufacturer has announced a drive power of 143 kW for the plug-in hybrid version, which will also be available at a later date. The catalog lists charging times for the electric drive with the 74 kWh battery as eight hours 18 minutes for 11 kW from zero to 100 percent, four hours 16 minutes for 22 kW from zero to 100 percent and 31 minutes for 160 kW direct current from 20 (!) to 80 percent. Presumably, the electric car is pre-conditioned from the outset. It was not yet available in the first Stellantis models on this basis.

The instrument panel measures 10.25 inches, the central screen 16 inches and a head-up display is available. Standard equipment includes LED matrix headlights, heated seats, front and rear parking sensors, a parking camera and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The catalog also lists ventilated massage seats and a semi-automatic lane change assistant. We find the option of a glass roof, which can also be opened, very commendable. This is becoming rare. As a "First Edition", the Compass with optional extras costs at least 42,400 euros as a mild hybrid and from 50,400 euros as a Jeep Compass Electric with 157 kW; orders are now being accepted.
