I/O edition: Google improves AI model Gemini Pro 2.5 for developers
Google has released a new pre-release version Gemini 2.5 Pro for web developers in the run-up to the I/O 2025 developer conference.

Google is offering a pre-release version of the multimodal AI model Gemini Pro 2.5. The so-called I/O Edition is aimed at developers who want to try out the model before the Google I/O 2025 developer conference. The latter begins on May 20.
According to Google, the updated version is initially designed for front-end development. It also offers "significantly improved capabilities" for other programming tasks such as "code conversion, code editing and the development of complex agent-based workflows".

Google states that the new pre-release version of Gemini 2.5 Pro currently tops the rankings in the developer benchmark "WebDev Arena". Start-ups such as Cognition and Replit are already using the new AI model to develop code agents that independently generate applications, according to Google.

Another new feature of the AI model is optimized video analysis, which can create entire applications from video content. As an example, Google shows an interactive learning platform that Gemini creates based on a single YouTube video. A VideoMME benchmark will prove how powerful the AI is: In it, the Gemini 2.5 Pro preview achieves a score of 84.8 percent. For comparison: Gemini 1.5 Pro achieves 75 percent and GPT-4o 71.9 percent.

"For developers already using Gemini 2.5 Pro, this new version will not only improve coding performance, but also address important feedback from developers, including reducing function call errors and improving function call trigger rates," Google writes in its announcement.
The model is available via the Gemini API in Google AI Studio. Enterprise customers can use Vertex AI. The new model is also available in the Gemini app and, according to Google, supports features such as Canvas. The respective prices remain unchanged.
Like the last developer conferences, Google I/O 2025 is once again likely to focus on AI in every respect. A few days ago, Google gave a first taste of upcoming Gemini assistance functions.
