Stock market plans: OpenAI and Microsoft allegedly in negotiations

OpenAI and its largest partner Microsoft are reportedly in negotiations about the conditions under which their collaboration should continue in the future. The two apparently agree on at least one point, namely that the current agreement, which extends until 2030, should be continued if possible. However, the extent of Microsoft's influence in the future, which has already invested over 13 billion US dollars in the start-up company, is disputed.
The billion-dollar partnership with Microsoft has been an important factor in OpenAI achieving its current market position in recent years. And it is likely to continue to be important in order to obtain the capital required to realize its ambitious plans for the future. These include the IPO and further research into Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
Relationship cooled significantly
At the same time, according to the Financial Times, the relationship between the two partners has cooled considerably. The newspaper cites several anonymous sources in both companies. OpenAI is striving for more independence and wants to expand its relationships with its own corporate customers. New partnerships with SoftBank and Oracle in the course of the "Stargate" project have made OpenAI more self-confident. At Microsoft, on the other hand, the AI company is seen as increasingly "arrogant".

OpenAI recently made headlines with a view to the future when CEO Sam Altman had to change his restructuring plans. The non-profit part was supposed to lose its influence. However, this is now to remain the case and instead, with a "Public Benefit Corporation", a business area is to be set up in such a way that OpenAI can reconcile its non-profit and profit interests. However, the non-profit board would retain its considerable influence on the company's fortunes and would become a major shareholder.
According to the FT, Microsoft is prepared to make concessions and give up some of its equity stake. In return, however, access to new technologies is also expected after 2030.
