Garmin's Forerunner 970 replaces the previous top model Forerunner 965 in the series. The Forerunner 570 model is a new option in the manufacturer's mid-range price segment, positioned above the Forerunner 265.
The two new sports watches have a few things in common, but also many differences. Among other things, only the Forerunner 970 has offline maps. The 570 is available in 42 and 47 mm sizes, the 970 only in 47 mm.

Similarities between the Garmin Forerunner 970 and 570
Both the Forerunner 970 and the slightly cheaper model have a built-in speaker and a microphone so that users can take calls on the go – if the smartphone is paired with the watch.

Both also have AMOLED touch displays and the familiar 5-button operation on board. In addition, both Garmins Elevate Gen 5 sensors measure skin temperature and blood oxygen saturation, among other things. There are also the usual typical sports and health metrics such as pulse and heart rate variability.
A new function for the evening report is also integrated into the models, which summarizes how much sleep you need. The report includes a summary of training sessions, other events and the weather for the next day. According to the manufacturer, the report can be customized as desired.
The new models also provide improved training and recovery metrics. Another new feature is the "Running Tolerance Tracker", which recommends a maximum weekly running distance for athletes depending on their fitness level.
Garmin Forerunner 970 with more functions and ECG
The Forerunner 970, developed for triathletes, has more functions to offer than the 570. For example, it has the "speed loss on ground contact" metric: In conjunction with the optional HRM 600 heart rate strap, wearers get real-time data on deceleration when the foot touches down. This enables the Forerunner 970, together with the "running dynamics, speed and heart rate, to evaluate the personal running economy". According to the manufacturer, this allows users to recognize how energy-efficient their own running style is.

The "Running Tolerance" is intended to show the biomechanical strain of running on the body and help to optimize training in a more targeted way to avoid overloading. Only the Forerunner 970 supports ECG measurement.
Garmin promises a battery life of up to 15 days for the Forerunner 970, while the 570 should last up to 10 days in smartwatch mode. Only the more expensive Forerunner 970 has an LED flashlight.
Apart from the functions and sizes, there are differences in the materials: the Forerunner 570 has an aluminum bezel and Gorilla Glass 3, while the 970 has a higher-quality titanium bezel and more robust sapphire glass.
The Forerunner 570 costs from 550 euros, while Garmin charges 750 euros for the Forerunner 970. The watches can be ordered from May 21.
