Notebook additional screen: Would you like a little more?

If you need more screen space than a notebook can provide when you're out and about in a hotel room or at a customer meeting, portable monitors can help: They are comparatively easy to take with you and usually only require a DisplayPort-compatible USB-C port on the notebook.

At Computex, Acer is now showing a particularly expansive model called the PD243Y E with two matte IPS panels, each with a 23.8-inch screen diagonal and Full-HD resolution. The decision to use two panels was made because the dimensions would hardly be any different with just one screen. Some kind of protection would also have to be folded in front of it so that the sensitive surface is not damaged during transportation. In this way, the overlapping outer sides of the display protect each other.

The giant dual display requires its own power supply and receives signals via two USB-C sockets and an HDMI input. The screens are capable of up to 100 hertz. The PD243Y E will be available in stores in the third quarter for 500 euros.

For those who want more screen area but want to remain backpack-compatible: a more compact version called the PD163QT has two 15.6-inch panels (also matte, also Full-HD, with touch, but only 60 hertz) and will cost 400 euros.

OLED to go

With a significantly higher resolution (2880 × 1800 pixels), rich colors (DCI-P3 coverage) and a refresh rate of up to 120 hertz, the PE160WU, which is also new, meets the highest demands. It has an OLED with a 16-inch diagonal; however, the surface is reflective. Acer has dispensed with a dual design here. At 600 euros, it is the most expensive of the three newcomers.
