During a developer session at the I/O developer conference, Google confirmed that one of the new highlight functions of Android 16 is not only intended for Pixel devices. The feature, called Live Updates, will also make it to smartphones from other manufacturers.

As Google explains, the function will also be available on smartphones from Samsung, Oneplus, Vivo and Xiaomi in addition to Pixel devices over the course of the year. Samsung is planning to integrate the live updates into the Now Bar with the upcoming update to One UI 8. The Now Bar was first introduced with One UI 7 and currently still offers a limited range of functions.
Oneplus will integrate the function into the so-called Live Alerts, which was introduced with Oxygen OS 15 and is somewhat reminiscent of Apple's Dynamic Island. Vivo and Xiaomi are to integrate the function into their respective Android interfaces – How exactly was not explained.

Live Updates: Google goes into more detail about functions
With Live Updates, Google is integrating real-time progress notifications from selected delivery, ride-sharing and navigation apps, which are displayed in real time on the lock screen or in the notifications. This allows users to find out more quickly when an Uber driver arrives or the food delivery arrives without having to unlock the smartphone or open the app.

During the Google I/O session for developers, the company presented the function in more detail and showed the interactive options of Live Updates. In contrast to Apple's “Live Activities” on the iPhone, it is possible, according to Google, to perform actions directly from the notification bar, such as calling the driver, sending a message or giving a tip.
Although the scope of supported services is clearly regulated, more options than those already mentioned are likely to be added. In a developer session specifically for the live updates, Google mentioned the possibility of integrating public transport departure times, for example. Further details for developers can be found in the Android developer blog.
