Data leak: criminals steal Adidas customer data

Cyber criminals have tapped into customer data at sporting goods manufacturer Adidas. The company announced this on Friday. The exact scope of the data leak is currently unclear.

In a “data security information”, Adidas provides initial indications of the stolen data. “Adidas recently learned that an unauthorized, external party obtained customer data through a contracted customer service provider,” the manufacturer writes there. “We took immediate steps to mitigate the incident and initiated a comprehensive investigation in collaboration with leading IT security experts,” Adidas continues.

The affected data did not contain any passwords, credit card information or other payment-related information, the sporting goods manufacturer emphasizes. “It essentially consists of contact information belonging to customers who have contacted our customer service in the past,” the manufacturer specifies. However, Adidas does not explain the time from which data was available. The company continues: “Adidas is in the process of informing potentially affected customers as well as relevant data protection and law enforcement authorities in accordance with applicable law”.

It remains unclear how the perpetrators were able to break into the Adidas service provider – for example by phishing access data or due to security gaps in the software used. Adidas has not yet responded to a request for further information and the specific extent of the leaked data. We will provide further information here if necessary.

Anyone who has contacted Adidas customer service in the past should exercise particular caution when receiving new messages if they relate to Adidas or sports activities. Criminals can use the captured data to tailor phishing campaigns, for example, as the information about the contact with Adidas provides thematic hooks.
