The developers of Tails have released version 6.16 of the Linux distribution for moving anonymously on the Internet. The changes compared to the emergency update 6.15.1 are minor – but anyone still using older versions should urgently upgrade to the latest version.

The version announcement for Tails 6.16 is extremely thin: The new version now includes the "Tor Browser" in version 14.5.3 and the Linux kernel in version 6.1.140. However, the interim version Tails 6.15.1, which was released in May, is worthy of note. The Tails maintainers described the version as an emergency release with important corrections to fix security-relevant vulnerabilities.

The "Tor Browser" 14.5.2 has closed vulnerabilities classified as critical risks in the Firefox ESR web browser 128, on which the anonymizing software is based. Thunderbird 128.0.1 has also been the latest version since then. The "Tor Browser" and "Tor Browser (persistent)" folders have been removed since this version, as they are no longer necessary due to the changes to the "Tor Browser" integration introduced with Tails 6.14.1.

Anyone who has not yet updated to Tails 6.15.1 or newer should do so now. The latest version of Tails is available for download as a USB image for transferring to USB sticks. Another website provides the download as an ISO image that can be burned to DVD or used in a virtual machine.

Version 6.15 of Tails was released at the beginning of May. It also essentially updated the "Tor Browser" and the Linux kernel. However, the programmers had also implemented small bug fixes in it, which should ensure better protection of privacy, for example after a crash with Kernel Panic or Oops.
