PayPal is kicked out of Google Wallet in the USA

US users will soon no longer be able to pay with PayPal via Google Wallet. Google announced this change in a support document. However, Germany is excluded from this: In this country, you should still be able to store PayPal in Google Wallet and use it for payment.

The background to this change is unknown and the blog entry provides no explanation. It is therefore unclear on whose initiative PayPal is being removed from Google Wallet – It is suspected that PayPal itself has decided to do this. Why and for how long the function will remain available in Germany, however, remains to be seen.

Contactless payment directly with PayPal

The change is particularly interesting because PayPal is currently working on its own contactless payment method that can be used to pay directly via the PayPal app. This feature has so far only been introduced in Germany; it is not yet available in the USA.

This is particularly interesting for iPhone users, who have not yet been able to integrate PayPal into their Apple Wallet. Android users in Germany will in future have the choice of paying with PayPal in Google Wallet or selecting PayPal directly as their default wallet. At least if the PayPal integration in Google Wallet actually remains in place in the long term.

For US users, the deadline is June 13, according to the support entry. The option to store PayPal in Google Wallet was already switched off there in April. Existing links will be cut on June 13, writes Google. "If you have set up recurring payments or subscriptions with your linked PayPal account from providers other than Google, update your payment method with these companies as soon as possible to avoid problems."
