Resolution Games, in collaboration with license holder Wizards of the Coast, has released a first look at the gameplay of the upcoming D&D VR game “Demeo x Dungeons & Dragons: Battlemarked”. Fantasy enthusiasts can also look forward to a conversion for PC and PlayStation.
Neverwinter Woods revealed as the setting
The highly acclaimed video game “Baldur's Gate 3” and the hit movie “Dungeons & Dragons” have brought the traditional D&D universe back into the mainstream. With “Battlemarked”, another license conversion of the pen-and-paper role-playing game originally developed in 1974 is now imminent.
The tabletop RPG was announced at the beginning of 2024, but there was no information on gameplay or images at the time. A new trailer now reveals gameplay scenes of the tactical turn-based battles for the first time and shows the setting of the adventure, the Neverwinter Woods. The first campaign will take players to familiar locations such as “Castle Cragmaw” and “Mount Hotenow”.

Balance between story and tactics
As with its spiritual predecessor Demeo, the basic gameplay will be based on tactical turn-based battles fought by rolling dice with animated board game pieces. However, Battlemarked will feature more dramatic cutscenes, dialog and game-based decisions.
Two story-based campaigns will be included in the game on release. With Matt Sernett as narrative director, the studio has recruited a D&D professional for the project. Sernett has already worked as a designer for the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop game and was involved in video game classics such as “Baldur's Gate”, “Baldur's Gate II” and "Icewind Dale”.

Availability on multiple platforms
In addition to a VR version for Playstation VR 2, Meta Quest and SteamVR, Resolution Games has confirmed that Battlemarked will also be playable on PC and PlayStation 5. With the help of the integrated cross-play feature, users of all platforms will be able to play together.
D&D fans will have to be patient, however. There is no exact release date yet, but Resolution Games is currently planning it for the end of 2025. In the coming months, the studio plans to publish a series of developer diaries that will provide deeper insights into the world, the writing, and the implementation of the D&D core elements in the demo system.
