Owlcat makes games for nerds: The Cypriot studio is known for deep CRPGs in the "Pathfinder" and "Warhammer" universes, which require players to be patient and willing to read. Now, for the first time, the studio is venturing into a title that is not played from a bird's eye view and therefore potentially appeals to a broader target group: "The Expanse: Osiris Reborn" is an action role-playing game that immediately brings back memories of "Mass Effect". The title was announced with a story trailer.

The "Mass Effect" references are obvious: Like the Bioware original, "Osiris Reborn" is to be controlled from the shoulder perspective. In battle, commands are issued to squad members, who can be involved in romances between missions. In a press release, Owlcat explicitly mentions the "Mass Effect" series as an inspiration.
"Osiris Reborn" is set in the universe of "The Expanse" from the books by James S. A. Corey, which was also featured in the Amazon series of the same name. Video game fans have already been able to get to know 'The Expanse' universe in Telltale adventures, which were released in 2023. The developers emphasize the down-to-earth nature of "The Expanse" universe: It offers the perfect backdrop to tell an adult, character-driven story in which decisions carry real weight.

Stranded on Eros
In "The Expanse: Osiris Reborn", players take on the role of a Pinkwater mercenary who is stranded on the space station Eros Station. Although there is a lockdown in place, players can also explore the solar system by ship during the game, according to the press release.
"Visit well-known locations such as Ganymede, Ceres, Mars and Luna. Walk through destroyed dwellings or political fortresses in a world characterized by uncertainty and tension. Talk to the locals. Uncover secrets. Use your skills to determine what happens next," Owlcat writes in the Steam description of the role-playing game. In between, you will even meet familiar faces.
There is no release date for "Osiris Reborn" yet. The game will be released for PC, Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5.
