VR studio Beat Games has announced that it will no longer be releasing updates or new content for the Playstation versions of the VR rhythm game and bestseller "Beat Saber" with immediate effect. However, the previously purchased content will remain available and playable. It will also still be possible to purchase the base game as well as older songs and music packs. The cross-buy option between PS4 and PS5 will also remain in place. Only online multiplayer support on Playstation VR and Playstation VR2 will end on January 21, 2026.
The decision comes just a few months after the retirement of founders Jaroslav Beck, Ján IlavskĂ˝ and VladimĂr Hrinčár, who founded the studio in 2018 and left one after the other in 2023 and 2024. Beat Games cites the future focus on new developments as the reason for the move. The aim is to focus on the "next big leap" for Beat Saber. This probably means an increased focus on PC VR and, above all, on Meta's VR platform Quest.
The decision to discontinue Playstation support is probably also related to the limited user base of Playstation VR2. Unlike Meta, which has built up a large reach with over 20 million Quest headsets sold, Sony is unlikely to have more than 3 million PSVR2 devices in circulation.

One of the most successful VR games of all time
Beat Saber was nevertheless successful on Playstation consoles. After its release in May 2023, it became the best-selling PSVR2 game of 2024 in North America, Europe and Japan. The game was also a long-running hit on the first Playstation VR. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Beat Saber is expected to have generated global sales of over USD 255 million by 2022.
The title was first released on SteamVR and the first Playstation VR in 2018. The Oculus Quest version followed in May 2019. Shortly afterwards, Meta announced the acquisition of developer Beat Games, which was responsible for new features and optional music packs featuring stars such as Lady Gaga and Linkin Park. The studio did not release any other VR games.
Despite being integrated into Meta's Oculus Studios, which also includes the recently merged VR studios Camouflaj and Downpour Interactive, the title has remained available on all platforms to this day and has been actively developed further.
