Android 16: Nothing promises update for Phone (3) by the end of September
During the presentation of the Phone (3), Nothing promised that the update to Android 16 would be released by the end of September.

The London-based tech start-up Nothing wants to release the update to Nothing OS 4.0, which is based on Android 16, for the third Nothing Phone by the end of the third quarter. This would make the company slower than Samsung: the company plans to deliver One UI 8 based on the new OS iteration for the first devices at the beginning of July.
Nothing still needs some time
Google released the update to Android 16 several months earlier than usual. As a result, the previous update schedule for all manufacturers got a little mixed up. According to Google, the earlier release "better aligns with the launch schedule" of devices across Google's ecosystem. That way, more devices could get the major version of Android sooner, hieĂź it was then.
For the Nothing Phone (3), Google's plan apparently did not work out, although Google says it is working closely with manufacturers. This is because the manufacturer's new smartphone has been announced with an older Android version, similar to last year's Pixel 9. Instead of Android 16, the phone (3) is still being delivered with Android 15 ex works.
Apparently, Nothing still needs some time for the update to Android 16. According to the company, it will only be released in the course of the third quarter, i.e. by the end of September 2025. In the announcement, it sounds like the new top model will receive the new OS version first. It is still uncertain when devices such as the Phone 3a and 3a Pro and older models will receive Android 16. We have asked Nothing for clarification.

One UI 8: Samsung wants to deliver Android 16 with new foldables
Samsung is one of the fast update team this time, after the company took its time with One UI 7 and Android 15. Samsung only began distributing the update in April 2025, although Google had already released Android 15 in October 2024. Nevertheless, the manufacturer has supplied almost all devices in its portfolio with One UI 7 within a short space of time, meaning that the next version can follow.
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 foldables, which will be released on July 9, will be equipped with One UI 8 based on Android 16 ex works, making Samsung the second manufacturer after Google to deliver the new OS version.
