The world of insects is fascinating, diverse – and full of photographic challenges. With the new photo competition "Bugs and Insects", c't Fotografie invites all photography enthusiasts to capture the hidden beauty of these small creatures and share it with the community. How you do this is entirely up to you. Whether with a macro lens, extension ring, microscope camera or classic telephoto lens: The decisive factor is not the technology, but your eye for detail.
From July 4, 2025 at 12:00 noon, registered users of the heise photo gallery can submit their best insect photo. Participation is free and the creative possibilities are almost limitless: from a shimmering dragonfly against the light to a symmetrical beetle portrait to a microscopic view of a wing structure –, we are looking for photos that impress with their sharpness, lighting and creative finesse.
The topic offers exciting challenges, especially for technically skilled photographers: Focus stacking, high-speed flash technology, self-built diffusers or self-programmed slider systems can help to stage the tiny motifs perfectly. However, impressive images can also be created with simple means –, for example during an early foray with the camera across a dewy meadow. A macro or telephoto lens and soft light are often all you need.
The evaluation phase begins on August 3, 2025 at 12:00 p.m. and ends on September 1, 2025. All registered members of the gallery can vote for the winner. The ten best images will be published in the 06/25 issue of c't Fotografie. All further information, such as the prizes you can win, can be found on the competition page.
Don't have gallery access yet? No problem: you can register here free of charge and become part of the community.
