On Bluesky, you can now be notified when certain accounts become active. Those who share content in particular now also receive more notifications.

Bluesky has significantly upgraded the notification settings: Among other things, you can now be notified directly when a certain account has posted something. Furthermore, you can now set notifications for interactions with your own account so that you are only informed if you follow the person in question.
This should be of particular interest to accounts with a large reach, as anyone with thousands of followers will otherwise lose track in the flood of notifications. In addition, Bluesky can now notify you when others interact with a post that you have only shared yourself.
Functions from the competition
The expanded settings for notifications are now available for the short message service both in the browser and in the apps. There you can also choose whether you want to receive notifications via push or only in the messages on Bluesky itself. If you want to be informed when certain accounts are active, you can click on the bell symbol on their profile. This function has long been known from Mastodon, where it works in exactly the same way. Notifications about interactions with posts that you have not even created, but only shared yourself, are already available for Meta threads. These are particularly motivating for users who prefer to share rather than write themselves.

The recently published update from Bluesky once again underlines how the competing short message services use each other. We have long been familiar with Mastodon's extremely extensive notification settings, but Bluesky has now raised the bar even higher. Threads, on the other hand, only got direct messages a few days ago; Bluesky has had them for a year, Mastodon for much longer. All three services see themselves as competitors to X, but the differences in size are enormous: according to Meta, Threads has more than 350 million monthly active users, Bluesky has more than six million and Mastodon has around 800,000.
