Visual worlds full of atmosphere: the pictures of week 28
Whether birds in flight, mushrooms in the grass or architecture in mysterious light – this week's images show how differently photography captures atmosphere.

This week's selection of images allows us to immerse ourselves in the poetry of the everyday, captured with a keen sense of light, perspective, and timing. Strict geometry in black and white, delicate nature studies, or great landscapes – the gallery photographers show the viewer how diverse photographic vision can be and how much calm, contrast, and character there is in a single image.
He looked and so did I
(Image:Â Carl-Peter Herbolzheimer)
Carl-Peter Herbolzheimer photographed a hovering kestrel in a perfect flying pose almost head-on in a cloudless, deep blue sky. Photographer and bird are looking directly into each other's eyes. The wings are symmetrically outstretched, giving the picture a balanced composition. The light falls from above and clearly emphasizes the fine structure and markings of the plumage in warm brown and beige tones. The focus is precisely on the bird's head and eyes, giving the photo expression and presence.
Contrasts
(Image:Â HarryRS)
HarryRS captured this seascape, which impresses with its dramatic lighting mood under a very cloudy sky. Bright rays of sunlight break through an opening in the dark clouds, appearing almost supernatural, as if they are searching for something in the endless blue. On the horizon, a few ships are dimly visible, giving the scene depth and a touch of wanderlust.
Stairs
(Image:Â kraftberg)
Gallery photographer kraftberg was out and about in the center of the Chicago Cultural Center, where this wide stone staircase runs, its ornate railings interspersed with geometric patterns. In the background, a large, round-arched window glows an intense blue. The light that falls through the glass bathes the room in a cool, mysterious atmosphere. A place that tells stories, hidden in stone and glass between light and shadow.
Lawn mushroom
(Image:Â peter_sw )
Two brown mushrooms stand close together in the tall, green grass.peter_sw reports: “I keep noticing the common lawn fungus in our lawn. Before I used the lawnmower, I had to take a photo of it, so I put the camera in the lawn and took several series and processed them into this focus stack of 15 photos.” As inconspicuous as they may seem, here in the picture they are quite large, as if seen from the perspective of a small animal. The scene looks very natural and calm, with a soft, diffuse light that makes the colors appear rich and vibrant. The foreground and background are blurred, which draws the focus to the two mushrooms.
Sakrisøy Lofoten
(Image:Â kmans)
The bright yellow house by the water has obviously decided not to adapt to the Norwegian drama and instead spread good cheer. Behind it rises an imposing, cloud-covered mountain shrouded in mystical fog. “This year we went to the Lofoten Islands. It was a dream destination for me and my husband: a year of planning and anticipation. Reine, Sakrisøy, and Hamnøy were at the top of our wish list. The weather put a spanner in the works. At least we were able to explore a few beautiful spots,” writes photographer Karin Mans.
“This picture was taken in a mostly dry spell, with only a light drizzle, and it was immediately clear to me that I preferred the gloomy look to the sunshine,” she continues. “The yellow house in particular provided a splash of color in the gloomy surroundings. I also immediately had the portrait format in mind, as I think it works better – with the mountain in the background – than the landscape format.” The composition is symmetrical, and the color contrasts between the house, the gray sky, and the dark rocks create an impressive atmosphere.
Rain Day
(Image:Â Zika )
A swamp swallow sits on a moss-covered wooden post with its beak open and sings an aria as if no one had informed it about the weather. Zika captures this rainy day, individual drops are visible as fine lines in the picture. The background is soft and blurred, clearly emphasizing the main subject. The photographer has placed the bird in the center of the picture, which, together with the soft bokeh, creates a sense of calm. The shot uses natural light, which emphasizes the fine details of the plumage.
Strandhuisjes
(Image:Â christof (1) )
This impressive black-and-white shot is primarily characterized by its strong graphic effect. The foreground is dominated by a rough, furrowed sandy surface with visible erosion edges. Behind it, a row of identical white, almost cube-shaped buildings rises, extending into the depths in perfect alignment and perspective. The buildings appear surreal in their clarity and geometry. The interplay of geometric order and natural unrest has been captured by christof (1) and lends the picture an exciting atmosphere.
