Light effects and angles: Pictures of the week 29
This week, our gallery photographers' images are condensed into small masterpieces of everyday life through light, timing, and perspective.
Caught Red-Handed
(Image: falki 50)
Technical sophistication meets creative vision: a fleeting moment in the beak of a kingfisher, geometric structures made of wood and steel, or the colorful spectacle of a New Year's Eve sky. The selected photographs show how different photography can be. Each image offers a unique view of the world and invites viewers to rediscover the familiar.
Crazy play of colors
(Image:Â Redfox 0070)
A sweeping view across the calm sea, the horizon dividing the sky and water into dramatic light and deep shadows. The setting sun colors the clouds in intense shades of orange, while the sky above fades into a cool violet and dark blue. The waves roll gently onto the dark beach, whose wet sand reflects the last rays of light. Footprints stretch across the foreground, but otherwise the scene is deserted. The composition of redfox 0070's image thrives on the strong contrast between light and dark and the vastness that unfolds impressively here.
Fish for the young birds
(Image:Â Pham Nuwem)
Close-up of a kingfisher on a branch: its plumage glows in rich blue and rusty orange. In its beak it holds a small, silvery fish, whose scales reflect the light. The focus is precisely on the bird's eye and its prey, while the background fades into deep black. The shot was taken at the perfect moment between the successful hunt and take-off.
Stefan Weber reports on how the picture was taken: “The photo was taken from a blind (i.e., planned) with the known location of the kingfisher and its nest cavity. As with any animal photography, luck and patience play a major role. It was unexpected that the kingfisher would present itself so beautifully and already have such large young birds at such an early stage. Experience has shown that this would normally only be expected one or two weeks later.”
Perspective of wood and steel
(Image:Â strukturblick)
Architectural motif with strong lines. The view goes vertically upwards along a pointed wooden structure. The symmetrical roof edges of the building intersect in the center of the image, almost like an arrow pointing to the sky. Scattered clouds frame the whole scene. An exciting composition of structural views created by form, material, and perspective by Mike_FJ
In flagrante
(Image:Â falki 50)
A chance find early in the morning: two flies caught “in flagrante” by falki 50, sitting on a blade of grass. What is inconspicuous in everyday life becomes a spectacular macro shot here. The bodies are covered with countless dewdrops that act like tiny lenses, magnifying the details. The wings appear glassy, and the bright red compound eyes stand out particularly well. The turquoise background provides a clear separation from the subject. A technical and design highlight.
New Year's Eve Skyline
(Image:Â Stephan Strange)
A fireworks display of colors over the nighttime skyline of Frankfurt. Hundreds of trails of light explode above the skyscrapers. In the foreground, the steel bridge spans the Main River, where people gather to watch the spectacle. The water reflects the colorful explosions in red, green, and gold, while clouds of smoke drift over the river.$(LP:%5B%22ver%22%2C2%2C%22type%22%2C%22E%22%2C%22url%22%2C%22https%3A%2F%2Fwww.heise.de%2Ffoto%2Fgalerie%2Fbenutzer%2FStephan-Strange-425165%2F%22%2C%22txt%22%2C%22%20Stephan%20Strange%22%5D) has captured the city in all its vibrancy and energy, in a moment between noise and wonder.
Rowing on Lake Maggiore...
(Image:Â tpau17)
When the sun goes down, a beautiful summer day draws to a close and you enjoy the peace and quiet in a rowing boat, you are very close to la dolce vita, so tpau17. A lone rower glides across the smooth surface of the water, bathed in the warm light of a golden sunset. In the background, dark mountain silhouettes are staggered, blurring in the haze. The entire scene is bathed in an intense orange. – Water, sky, and mountains merge into a harmonious expanse of color, a tranquil composition.
The die is cast.
(Image:Â metapix)
The famous Brussels landmark appears here in reduced black and white. The sky is almost burnt out, a contrast that emphasizes the shiny spheres and clear lines of the building. The perspective from below emphasizes the monumental structure and gives the image graphic power— –, a classic reinterpreted by metapix.
