The Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom electric sports boat set a speed record in the “Speed” category at the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge. In the competition for emission-free boat propulsion systems, the 850 Fantom achieved an average speed of 49.84 knots (approximately 92.3 km/h) over 2 km. At this speed, the sports boat left all its competitors far behind.
The Monaco Energy Boat Challenge was founded in 2006 by the Prince of Monaco to promote emission-free propulsion technologies through competition under real-world conditions. The competition is supported by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation for Environmental Research, among others. In the challenge, boats with sustainable propulsion systems, including electric and hydrogen boats, compete in different classes such as Energy Class, AI Class, Sea Lab, and Open Sea Class to demonstrate and compare the effectiveness of their propulsion systems.
New speed record
The 8.67 m long and 2.49 m wide Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom took part in the Open Sea Class in the “Speed” category of the competition. The boat had to achieve the highest possible average speed over a 2 km section. Frauscher and Porsche used an unmodified production model of the Fantom 850 with a closed foredeck, which is powered by a drive train from the Porsche Macan electric car that has been adapted for use in the electric boat.

The drive system comprises a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PSM), a high-voltage battery with 800-volt technology, and a control unit. The powertrain delivers an output of 400 kW. The drive system offers four drive modes: Docking, Range, Sport, and Sport Plus.
Together with its sleek, lightweight hull, the Fantom 850 achieved an average speed of 92.3 km/h on the 2 km course, the highest speed ever recorded at the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge.
The Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom is a joint project between the car manufacturer Porsche and the Austrian boat builder Frauscher. Both companies are contributing their respective expertise to the project. Porsche is supplying the complete drive system, including the high-voltage battery. Frauscher is responsible for final assembly, logistics, and after-sales management. The boat is being assembled at the Frauscher shipyard in Ohlstorf, Upper Austria.
