AVM has completed the FritzOS 8.20 router firmware and is distributing the update to the first Fritzbox devices. Owners of a Fritzbox 7590 can initiate the update via the web interface or install a new image.
AVM will typically supply other routers in the coming weeks and months. All models listed on AVM's product page and still available for purchase may receive FritzOS 8.20. In addition, a few older models have already received lab beta versions, so final updates are likely to follow. These include:
- Fiber optic + DSL: 5690 Pro
- DSL: 7690, 7590 (AX), 7530 (AX), 7510
- Fiber: 5690, 5590 Fiber, 5530 Fiber
- Cable: 6690 Cable, 6670 Cable, 6660 Cable, 6591 Cable
- Mobile: 6860 5G, 6850 5G, 6890 LTE, 6850 LTE, 6820 LTE
- Without modem: 4690, 4060, 4050
FritzOS 8.20 is also available for Fritz repeaters. Please note that there is no guarantee that all models in the list will receive FritzOS 8.20.
Failsafe and other new features
The manufacturer says there are more than 40 new features and improvements in FritzOS 8.20. One core feature is the so-called failsafe: users can connect a failover device via WAN, LAN, or USB, which the router will fall back on in the event of Internet problems. The fail-safe device can be a modem, a router, or a mobile stick for an alternative Internet connection. A smartphone with USB tethering also works in this mode.
We have already tried out Failsafe using a preview version and explain how the technology works:
The online monitor gets additional analysis functions. Users can view all traffic from the last two weeks, but also filter by top users and individual devices. This allows you to see who is using the Internet connection the most.
The Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) energy-saving feature can be set individually for each WAN and LAN connection in FritzOS 8.20. This allows the maximum speed to be reduced to up to 100 Mbit/s to save power. This can be useful when connecting a smart home bridge while the desktop PC continues to run at full speed.

Further improvements include Fritz NAS with new upload sharing for entire folders, new options for smart homes, and easier setup of mesh networks.
