CompuGroup Medical, a major IT service provider in the healthcare sector, has been awarded a multi-year contract to digitize the Bundeswehr's medical service. The eHealth company, which has often been criticized in the past, will support BWI GmbH, the IT system house of the German Armed Forces, with digital medical and dental information systems in the outpatient sector.

According to Daniel Gotthardt, CEO of CompuGroup Medical, the software will support various processes such as medical assessments or "the mapping of the troop structures themselves". The contract has a term of up to seven years and a volume in the mid double-digit million euro range. "The tender is one of the largest in the field of ambulatory software for armed forces in Europe," says CGM.

It is unclear whether the software is the one that can also be used to fill the Bundeswehr's planned electronic patient file (ePABw). CGM has not yet responded to this. A contract for the ePABw, the equivalent of the current "ePA for all" is to be put out to tender this year.

In the past, CGM, which operates numerous practice management systems, has come in for a lot of criticism for various reasons. Recently, for example, Correctiv reported on the company's market power and its links to healthcare policy.
