Intel reissues 3.5-year-old processors
The Core 5 120(F) is an old acquaintance. It corresponds to a minimally accelerated Core i5-12400(F) for an old platform.
The big brother of the Core 5 120(F) and Core i5-12400(F) has efficiency cores in addition to the performance cores. The cheaper models have to do without these.

Intel has unceremoniously released two more desktop processors onto the market: the Core 5 120 and Core 5 120F. Although the names suggest reasonably modern technology, they are actually just old Alder Lake models from 2022.
Intel has added the two sister models to its Ark database. In the USA, the store BLT already lists both processors at still high prices of just under 220 (Core 5 120F) and 250 US dollars (Core 5 120), excluding taxes. This corresponds to around 225 and 255 euros, including tax. This makes them around twice as expensive as their almost identical predecessors.
The two models largely correspond to the Core i5-12400F (starting from 124,99 €) and Core i5-12400 (starting from 155,07 €). All four variants use six performance cores without additional efficiency cores. In the new edition, Intel only mentions clock frequencies of up to 4.5 GHz, increased by 100 MHz.
Fake Raptor Lakes
In the Ark database, the code name Raptor Lake is actually noted, which Intel has assigned to the Core i-13000 series. Even the 13000 series was only a slightly improved version of the 12000 processors with higher clock frequencies and larger level 2 caches.
In the case of the Core 5 120 and Core 5 120F, however, the level 2 cache size of 1.25 MByte per CPU core corresponds to the 12000 series (Alder Lake). The H0 stepping listed also points to Alder Lake – Raptor Lake came in the B0 and C0 steppings. Intel (as well as other chip designers) use this abbreviation when they make changes to the chips, for example, to correct design errors.
On the positive side, Raptor Lake had to contend with production flaws that Alder Lake did not yet have.

The Core 5 120 and Core 5 120F run exclusively with LGA1700 mainboards. The current LGA1851 platform is incompatible.
Intel has already launched the Alder Lake new edition for notebooks and edge servers. If in doubt, interested parties should check the Intel Ark for the specifications before making a purchase. The code names are also noted in our price comparison to reduce confusion.
