Google is opening up its AI research tool NotebookLM to younger users aged 16 and over. It is designed to help students learn.

Google is now also offering its NotebookLM research tool for younger users. It is designed to help pupils “learn, study, and understand their course materials.”
According to Google, students can convert their notes into an audio overview in podcast form in several languages. It is also possible to create interactive mind maps to visualize connections between their learning materials. They can also ask questions about their sources to deepen their understanding.
NotebookLM is not AI training material for students
As the company explains, NotebookLM is equipped with stricter content guidelines for users under the age of 18 “to prevent potentially inappropriate or harmful responses”. In addition, the chats of users as well as the sources they upload are not reviewed by humans or used to train AI models, it continues.
In addition, just like the AI assistant Gemini, NotebookLM is available to users of Google Workspace for Education “as a core service” for all age groups and is subject to the “orkspace for Education” terms of use.
In principle, Google NotebookLM is available internationally for users aged 13 and over. However, some countries have individual and higher minimum ages for using a Google account. In Germany, the minimum age for Google accounts is 16, in Austria, 14.
