JetBrains has released the new major version 2025.2 of its IntelliJ IDEA development environment, which is specifically designed for Java and Kotlin. It brings updates for the AI tools as well as early support for the not yet released versions Java 25 and Maven 4. The IDEs RubyMine and WebStorm have also reached version 2025.2.
AI code completion for additional languages and in offline mode
The JetBrains AI Assistant and the JetBrains AI Coding Agent Junie are available free of charge within JetBrains development environments. When developers update IntelliJ IDEA, for example, they automatically receive the latest versions of the AI Assistant. Junie, on the other hand, must be updated manually and can be installed via Settings | Plugins.
The AI Assistant now provides new features such as AI-supported auto-completion for SQL, YAML, JSON, and Markdown, as well as code block suggestions for Java in offline mode. With offline Java completion, it is possible to select a preferred local code completion model. Junie is said to be up to 30 percent faster and can also be used in remote environments.
Details can be found on the associated “What's New” page. This page also has a new design that focuses on the highlights – because, according to JetBrains, visitors to the “What's New” pages don't usually scroll very far. A “What's Fixed” page is also to follow, which will provide information about quality and stability improvements.

Support for Java 25 and Maven 4
Next month, the Java programming language will be released in LTS version (Long-Term Support) 25, and JetBrains is already preparing for this: early access builds of the next Java release can be downloaded from IntelliJ IDEA, and there is support for both final and preview features of Java 25.

On October 14, everything at the betterCode() Java 2025 will revolve around Java 25, which is planned for September. The online conference, organized by iX and dpunkt verlag, will cover the main innovations in six presentations. A keynote speech by Adam Bien on 30 years of Java will round off the day.
The dependency management tool Maven has been on its way to version 4 for some time now, and this upcoming version can also be used in IntelliJ IDEA before its final release – in the form of the latest release candidate.
All other updates in IntelliJ IDEA, RubyMine, and WebStorm 2025.2 can be viewed on the JetBrains blog.
Price increase from October 1, 2025
JetBrains recently caused a stir not with new features but with a price increase: subscriptions for all development environments and other tools will become pricier from October 1, 2025, in some cases by 20 percent. The current prices can still be maintained for a limited period until the deadline – with advance payment –: up to three years for individual subscriptions and up to two years for commercial subscriptions.
