Shortly after OpenAI presented its new GPT-5 models, Microsoft announced the integration into Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot, Azure AI Foundry, GitHub Copilot, and other applications. According to the company, the upgrades are available immediately.
ChatGPT-5 for Copilot
According to Microsoft, it is not relying on a single ChatGPT-5 model; a so-called “model router” decides which of the new models should be used by a control layer operating in the background. This means that users do not have to worry about which model is the right one for the task at hand.
According to Microsoft, the smart mode in Copilot will enable the AI assistant to switch between models so that users can use the right AI model for their application.
Interested parties can try out ChatGPT-5 with Microsoft Copilot for free at copilot.microsoft.com or via the Copilot app on Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS devices, the company explains.
OpenAI's new model for businesses and developers
Microsoft 365 Copilot users will also have immediate access to GPT-5: The company Copilot should be able to think through more complex questions better, keep track of longer conversations, and better understand the user's context, Microsoft explains in an announcement article.

The new AI model is also intended to help extract content from emails and documents to help users “stay on top of their work and be more productive”. GPT-5 is also moving into the Copilot Studio platform for creating custom AI agents.

Developers will also have access to ChatGPT-5. The company is now making the new model available for all paid GitHub Copilot plans so that they can try out the AI while writing code. With the Azure AI Foundry extension, developers can also use GPT-5 in VS Code to develop agents – without having to leave the code editor, writes Microsoft.
The company is also making GPT-5 available via the Azure AI Foundry. This allows developers to use the model in AI-supported applications: In doing so, developers can use the model router in the Azure AI Foundry “to ensure that the right model is used for the task or query at hand”.
