Nine volts to nibble on: battery flavor from the chip bag
Anyone who licks a 9V battery knows the odd zingy taste. Now, that weird and needless sensation has been turned into a snack you can actually eat.

The summer slump gets a flavor: the 9V battery. This flavor is likely to bring back some childhood memories. Who doesn't vaguely remember the tingling sensation on the tongue, combined with the strange metallic taste, when you lick the contacts of a 9-volt battery for the first – and often only – time?
What was a one-off experience for some and a human state-of-charge test procedure for old 9V blocks for others is now being revived by Dutch snack brand Rewind as a product with a dubious taste: they offer tortilla chips with the aroma of a 9-volt battery.
Developed for social media
The product development, which is likely to be above all a funny marketing stunt to raise awareness for more harmless flavor variants of the product, is also viewed by the makers with a wink. "Bizarre flavor trends and viral food experiments are omnipresent on social media, but the snack brand Rewind now wants to go one better," they write in a press release.

So if you wish to relive old childhood memories, you no longer have to cannibalize your smoke detector or 9-volt-powered musician's accessories, but can simply reach for a bag of chips. The chips could also be suitable for electrical engineering theme parties, or as a surprise for a colleague who is always particularly uninhibited when it comes to office snacks.
Rewind explains that the 9V taste experience is created with a mixture of citric acid and sodium bicarbonate for a tingling effect on the tongue. Mineral salts would provide a metallic taste. They describe the result as surprisingly tasty.
Rewind is offering a prize draw for taste adventurers. Anyone who registers their interest using the form on their website will have the chance to win a copy of the first edition.
Meanwhile, the manufacturer strongly advises against licking real batteries: "We do not recommend or condone licking, biting or otherwise ingesting real batteries."
