With the return of major exhibitors such as Nintendo, Gamescom is once again gaining in importance in 2025. Although it does not open to visitors until Wednesday, August 20, 2025, there were already some new announcements at the opening show on Tuesday evening. Fans of Far Eastern role-playing action will be particularly pleased about a sequel to 'Black Myth: Wukong'.

The real-time strategy title “Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV” and the open-world adventure “Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight” were also unveiled. As usual, the “Opening Night Live” was hosted by Geoff Keighley (The Game Awards), this time in tandem with Belgian e-sports presenter Eefje “sjokz” Depoortere. An overview of the most important games presented:

The popular Far Eastern “Black Myth Wukong” is getting a successor: Geoff Keighley unveiled “Black Myth Wukong: Zhong Kui” as the last big announcement of the show. This is another action role-playing game for single players inspired by Chinese folklore. There were no game scenes to be seen yet, but there was a glimpse of the sinister art design inspired by Chinese folklore. This time you don't play a monkey warrior, but take on the role of the eponymous Zhong Kui.

Behind two human climbers, the camera pans to some peacefully marching giants with a gigantic sword and an even bigger tiger. They will presumably all appear much more combative in the final game. A release date is not yet known. Developer Game Science named PC and “mainstream console platforms” as platforms. Part 1 set a new user record on Steam in August 2024.

The action platformer “Hollow Knight: Silksong” is almost as eagerly awaited by fans as “Grand Theft Auto 6.” Its predecessor from 2017 already featured an incredibly lovingly drawn-open 'Metroidvania' world reminiscent of Tim Burton. The second part, which was announced six years ago, can be played at Microsoft and Nintendo in Cologne and also made a brief appearance at the opening.

However, only short, wild battle scenes in small rooms and against large enemies, such as a wasp hissing through the room at lightning speed, were presented. More will be shown in the developers' stream on August 21. Developer Team Cherry is then planning a “special announcement on YouTube.” According to Geoff Keighley, “Hollow Knight: Silksong” will be released later this year. It is in the works for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2.

The Dark Knight returns to the brick-and-mortar version of Gotham City. “Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight” is set in an open world that can be explored in vehicles or gliding with the cape. Shortly before Gamescom, rumors emerged that the story will revolve around playable Batman variants from several movies, comics, and TV series—including numerous allusions.

The series-typical combat system is once again based on counterattacks against cuddly animated mobs and gadgets such as the Batarang or the Batclaw. Playable characters such as Batman, Catwoman, and Batgirl all come with their equipment. Adversaries include Bane, the Joker, and the Penguin. “Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight” will be released in 2026 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch 2.

At the Gamescom opening, developer Hexworks Games did not yet show any real game scenes from its action role-playing game “Lords of the Fallen II.” However, a dramatic mood trailer already showed that the series is sticking to its dark, ornate design. However, the game is set to be bloodier, more brutal, and faster.

It is actually already the third part of the “Souls-likes.” Developed with the Unreal Engine 5, the title can also be played in co-op multiplayer alongside the campaign. “Lords of the Fallen II” will be released later this year for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

Revealed two years ago, “Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2” from developer The Chinese Room and publisher Paradox Interactive has been given a release date. The action role-playing game for solo players will be released on October 21, 2025. As an ancient vampire ancestor, you fight your way through besieged Seattle, which is on the brink of war. In the trailer, this was expectedly bloody.

Various attack tactics and decisions will determine how you experience the adventure. The choice of vampire clan plays an important role. It determines how much you focus on direct fistfights or sneaky attacks from a distance. “Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2” is in development for PC, PS4, and Xbox Series X/S.

The real-time strategy game “Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV,” freshly announced at Gamescom, is intended to return the series to its roots in the genre. In over 70 missions, players command four factions from “Warhammer 40,000” and, for the first time, the “Adeptus Mechanicus” organization. Publisher Deep Silver has commissioned Bremen-based studio King Art (“The Book of Unwritten Tales,” “The Dwarves,” “Iron Harvest”) to develop the game.

“Gather your army, build your base, assemble specialized squads, and experience the carnage with the improved sync-kill system,” is how the Steam listing describes the gameplay. In multiplayer mode, battles are available in “1v1,” “2v2,” or “3v3” variants. Skirmishes against the AI and the “last stand” are also included. In addition to existing factions from Warhammer 40,000, you can edit your own with a painter's tool. “Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV” will be released in 2026 for PC via Steam.
