Asus' ROG Matrix Platinum GeForce RTX 5090 is reminiscent of the Radeon HD 4870
Asus wants to launch the fastest GeForce RTX 5090. The ROG Matrix Platinum is reminiscent of old models such as the Radeon HD 4870.

Nvidia's currently fastest gaming graphics card, the GeForce RTX 5090, is getting a highly upgraded ROG Matrix version from Asus. The ROG Matrix Platinum GeForce RTX 5090 follows a good 2.5 years after the GeForce RTX 4090 of the same name.
While its predecessor still featured a large all-in-one water cooling system, Asus has opted for a large air cooler for the 5090 model. According to the manufacturer, the rounded design is inspired by the EN9800GT Matrix from 2008, which still had a radial fan at the time. However, the red color scheme may also remind some people of old Radeon graphics cards, such as the reference design of the HD 4770 or HD 4870.

Up to 800 watts of electrical power consumption
The ROG Matrix Platinum GeForce RTX 5090 occupies just under four slots and is 358 mm long. There are three axial fans at the front and a fourth at the rear. Under the hood, a large copper vapor chamber takes care of heat dissipation to the heat sink. The so-called liquid metal between the GPU and vapor chamber is intended to further improve heat dissipation.
In addition to the standard 12V-2x6 power connector, Asus optionally uses the proprietary BTF connector on the underside. On suitable Asus mainboards such as the TUF Gaming B850-BTF Wi-Fi (starting from 234 €) or ROG Maximus Z890 Hero BTF (starting from 713 €), the graphics card can draw up to 800 watts. Without the BTF connector, the maximum is 600 watts.
In 800 watt mode, Asus specifies a boost clock frequency of 2730 MHz; otherwise, it is 2580 MHz as standard. For comparison, Nvidia specifies 2407 MHz for a standard RTX-5090.

)The ROG Matrix Platinum GeForce RTX 5090 uses shunt resistors to measure the current flow across all cable cores and to detect possible overheating of individual cores. The graphics card also contains sensors for position detection. Asus' GPU Tweak III software tool is supposed to be able to warn of a misalignment, for example.
No price known yet
Asus has not yet commented on the delivery date or price of the ROG Matrix Platinum GeForce RTX 5090. The graphics card is likely to be significantly pricier than the previous top model, the ROG Astral BTF (starting from 2969 €), which currently costs around 3000 euros.
Meanwhile, the manufacturer is advertising the graphics card with a 30th anniversary. Asus is referring to the start of the design of its first own graphics card, the Asus 375 with an S3-ViRGE GPU. The design phase began in 1995; it was available from 1996.
