While the update to Android 16 QPR1 (Quarterly Platform Release) with the new Material 3 Expressive user interface should land on Pixel 6 to 9 in a few days or weeks, Google is already preparing the next update with QPR2. It can be tested on Pixel devices via the Android beta program. The new Android version once again brings new functions. Among other things, Google wants to make the switch from iOS to Android smoother.
Android 16 QPR2
With the update to Android 16 QPR2, which is available as the first beta with the version number BP41.250725.006 for Pixel smartphones 6 to 9 and the Pixel tablet, Google is integrating an extension of the dark theme, among other things. When the function is activated by the user, the "system intelligently inverts the user interface of apps" that do not offer a dark theme by default.

According to Google, this feature is an accessibility function for people with visual impairments or light sensitivity. However, it can also be used by users who prefer a system-wide dark theme. The company recommends that developers and companies offer a native dark theme for their apps. This is the only way for developers to have "complete control over the appearance of their app".

In addition, Google automatically implements a theme-related icon for apps with the Android version if they do not provide a corresponding icon for the Android dynamic theme. According to Google, the system then applies a color filter algorithm to the existing app icon "to display it in a monochrome style so that it can be integrated into the theme chosen by the user". Another new feature is that the app's user interface remains fully interactive when the system sharesheet is open.
Easier switch from iOS to Android
With Android 16 QPR2, Google is integrating a new data transfer API for third-party providers. This is intended to enable "more reliable and secure data migration between Android and iOS devices". Apps from third-party developers can be enabled to participate in cross-platform data transfers, according to Google.
A migration tool for switching between the Android and iOS operating systems or vice versa is already available from both companies. Google is now aiming to make app transfer even easier.
Another new feature is the ability to annotate, edit and sign PDF documents with native tools. Users can also place widgets on the lock screen; this was previously only possible on the Pixel tablet.
Android 16 QPR2 also provides more security: with the new version, Google is introducing a comprehensive upgrade to Android's identity verification function. The anti-theft function is now designed to protect even more apps from unauthorized access: When identity verification is enabled in Android 16 QPR2, apps are no longer allowed to accept screen lock data (PIN, pattern or password) when a biometric prompt is requested.
Further features
Android 16 QPR2 introduces even more features: The update brings IAMF decoding (Audio Model and Formats) and offers personal audio sharing in the output switcher, according to Google. The IAMF decoder supports Opus, PCM, AAC and FLAC audio in IAMF files and, according to Google, is fully compliant with the IAMF specification.
Google AAudio APIs also adds an HDR/SDR brightness control. Companion device management and network privacy for MediaRouter have also been improved. Developers should take a look at the announcement einen and the further documentation.
Android 16 QPR2 with small SDK release
Google points out that this version is the first Android beta with a smaller SDK version. The new SDK allows the company to "innovate faster with new platform APIs that are delivered outside of our usual annual schedule".

Unlike the major platform release in Q2 (with the release of Android 16), changes in QPR2 are "largely additive and designed to minimize additional app testing".
Android 16 QPR 2 will be released in Q4
According to Google, the final update for Pixel devices will be released during the vierten quarter. In previous years, Google had released its QPR update as a Pixel drop in December.
