Google: Pixel 10 supports satellite voice and video calls via WhatsApp

From August 28, future owners of the Pixel 10 series will be able to make video and voice calls via WhatsApp, even if they are not on a Wi-Fi or mobile network. The data connection is via satellite.

WhatsApp calls via satellite

The new, initially exclusive WhatsApp function for the Pixel 10 devices was not mentioned during the Google event hosted by US show host Jimmy Fallon. Instead, Google only announced the feature a day later via its X channel "Made By Google".

The X post, which is accompanied by a video demonstrating the feature, provides few details about the feature. However, the whole thing seems to be quite simple: if neither mobile nor Wi-Fi connectivity is available, users of a Pixel 10, 10 Pro and 10 Pro XL can establish a data connection via satellite to make voice and video calls.

With this function, Google is taking satellite-based communication out of the emergency area and integrating it into everyday life to a certain extent. People in remote areas or outdoor enthusiasts can stay in touch with friends and family.

Fees could apply

Google and WhatsApp do not go into any more detail in their announcement on X. However, small print was shown for a short sequence in the post, stating that the offer was subject to "restrictions, terms and conditions". In addition, the satellite service would only work with participating providers and may incur additional charges on top of the usual bill.

Furthermore, the usual requirements for any satellite communication apply: users must be outdoors and have a clear view of the sky. It should also be noted that satellite services, including SMS to the emergency number, may be delayed, restricted or unavailable.

Google cooperates with Skylo

Google is cooperating with the US company Skylo Technologies as a provider of satellite communications. The company, based in Mountain View, California, offers non-terrestrial network services. The collaboration goes back to the Pixel 9, in which Google integrated an emergency call function with Skylo's satellite network.

In addition to WhatsApp calls, the satellite function of the Pixel 10 series also enables location data to be sent via Google Maps or the Find Hub if required. The new Pixel Watch 4 also supports satellite emergency calls via satellite, but initially only in the US mainland. Other regions are to follow.

Satellite communication via smartphones is not entirely new: however, Apple only offers SOS satellite tools for its iPhones, while Samsung introduced messaging via Snapdragon Satellite with the Galaxy S25, but apparently only for Verizon customers.
