What is now possibly the most successful film in Netflix history has been available on the streaming service for over two months and still attracted more people to US cinemas at the weekend than any other. This means that "KPop Demon Hunters" has now added a particularly unusual chapter to its immense success story. After all, the animated film had already been viewed over 210 million times on the streaming platform by August 17. Nevertheless, according to the industry website Box Office Mojo, it grossed 18 million US dollars at the US box office on Saturday and Sunday alone, over seven million US dollars more than the second-placed title.
Already in cinemas for the second time
"KPop Demon Hunters" is about a successful K-pop girl band whose musicians have secret superpowers and fight demons masquerading as a boy band. The animated film has been available on Netflix since June 20 and has been viewed over 20 million times every week since then. According to Netflix, this figure has even risen recently, with the title breaking the 26 million views mark in each of the last two weeks of July. This is another reason why Netflix has apparently decided to bring the film back to US cinemas after all. In June, "KPop Demon Hunters" was already shown for a week in three cinemas in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York City. However, Netflix only wanted to ensure that it would be included in the selection for the Oscars.

However, the surprise hit is not only successful on the big screen, the soundtrack to "KPop Demon Hunters" is also breaking records by the dozen. According to market research company GfK Entertainment, the song "Golden" is the official summer hit of 2025 in Germany. The entire album was the first soundtrack in seven years to reach the top of the charts in this country. In the USA, the album also currently has four songs in the top 10 of the singles charts. No soundtrack has ever achieved this before, writes Variety. Although some soundtracks have already had four songs in the singles charts, this has never been the case at the same time.
