Matrix.org home server back online after outage
Following a database error, the Matrix home server was offline. The backup is currently being restored; individual instances are not affected .

The Matrix Foundation's central server is currently unavailable. According to the operators, the cause is a serious database failure. This is being restored from a complete backup from last night of around 55 TB, which could still take some time according to Matrix.

It is therefore currently not possible to use Matrix's Element client. The own instances are not affected by the outage, as the Bluesky account of the Matrix Foundation emphasizes several times. For example, the TI Messenger works in the healthcare sector, which also uses the Matrix protocol.
An attempt to restore the primary database via a point-in-time backup from the previous evening had previously failed, as the organization announced via Bluesky. The Matrix Foundation provides regular updates on the progress of the work via its account.
The organization, which plays a key role in coordinating the development of the open Matrix protocol, asks all affected users for their patience and apologizes for the ongoing inconvenience. Matrix is best known for its federal system, which enables users to communicate securely and decentralized across different independent servers.
