Robot mowers cut the grass quite thoroughly in the area. But they often leave plenty of stalks at the edge. It's difficult for the autonomous machines to get there. The safety distance they need to keep to avoid slipping into the bed is too great. The NexLawn brand, a sub-brand of the manufacturer Mova, which in turn belongs to the household appliance company Dreame, is working on a new approach to clear edges.

At IFA 2025, NexLawn is showcasing a prototype of a robotic lawnmower equipped with a mechanical gripper arm. The device from the planned model series called Master X will not only be able to mow, but also weed, pick and even retrieve objects.

The mechanical gripper arm is mounted on a 25 centimeter high all-wheel chassis. It can be folded down to 44.5 centimetres and extended up to 77 centimetres. The reach of the arm is said to be one meter. At its other end is a tool carrier for various attachments. The initial equipment includes a multifunction gripper, a trimmer head and a rotating disk head.

The latter two tools are designed for precise trimming of stalks in hard-to-reach areas. The gripper is said to be suitable for clearing branches, toys and stones out of the way so that the robot can mow the cleared area unhindered. According to NexLawn, this gripper tool also helps to remove weeds, water the plants and collect fallen fruit. The robotic lawnmower is also said to be able to entertain pets with its gripper arm. This probably means that it throws sticks away, which dogs then bring back.

While other, more conventionally equipped robot mowers from NexLawn are set to make their debut in the 2026 gardening season, a launch date for the Master X gripper arm model has not yet been set. You can get a first impression of the prototype at stand 106 in hall 9 at IFA from September 5 to 9, 2025.
