WhatsApp tests Live Photos: Apple format comes to the messenger
WhatsApp is currently testing the sending of Live Photos on iOS in its beta program. This would also allow the messenger to build a bridge to Android.

WhatsApp is currently testing a new function in its beta program for iOS that allows users to send Live Photos for the first time. This Apple image format combines a static image with a short video clip that is recorded while the photo is being taken. A special feature is that Live Photos can also be sent to Android users in this way. Conversely, they can send Motion Photos to iOS users. Motion Photos are the Android equivalent of Live Photos, although various manufacturers such as Samsung and Google have developed their own implementations.
According to the blog WABetaInfo, the new function is being tested in version 25.24.10.72, which WhatsApp has rolled out via its test flight beta channel. However, not all testers will get to see it. Curiously, some users of the stable version from the App Store will also be able to enjoy the feature. It is assumed that the circle of activated users will be gradually expanded over the next few weeks.
Live Photos introduced ten years ago
WhatsApp has taken a long time to integrate Live Photos into its messenger. Apple introduced the photo format ten years ago, in 2015, together with the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Until now, however, the video sequences of Live Photos could already be partially used as animated GIFs—so at least the movement was retained, albeit in a jerkier form, with poorer image quality and without sound. Those who wanted to send Live Photos therefore switched to iMessage.

With the new function in WhatsApp, Live Photos could also be saved as such in Apple's Photos app. As with iMessage, Live Photos are marked in the preview image in Messenger. Users should also retain full control over whether they send a photo with Live Photo or not.
Liquid Glass support is also in the works
A rapid introduction of Liquid Glass is apparently also planned for WhatsApp. Apple's new design will be introduced with iOS 26. WABetaInfo has already published screenshots showing WhatsApp with the new glass tab bar and the new button design.
