Elegance, wildness and quiet spaces: the pictures of the week

Sometimes close and detailed, sometimes wide and atmospheric, this week's photographs show how differently moments can be captured in pictures. The journey ranges from a shaking dog to a quiet reflection on Lake Simssee. A chrysanthemum unfolds its colorful symmetry just as impressively as a flowering mantis unfolds its ornamental shape. A gallery of contrasts unfolds between the golden heath at sunrise, mysteriously closed gates and the lonely church tower in the middle of the landscape.

Lola explodes

This dynamic snapshot by anbeco4macro captures a dog shaking and water droplets flying through the air in all directions. The black and white image creates a powerful contrast that makes the movement appear even more intense. The finely balanced shades of gray and the clear focus in the foreground lend the picture a timeless aesthetic quality.

Elfuhrsiebzehn

The church tower of Vogareuth rises with its elegant roof construction above a green meadow. The image composition thrives on the strong contrast between the grass in the foreground and the blue-grey of the sky in the background. Photographer Bowtie describes how he used the 300 mm telephoto lens to create a compression that makes the tower appear as if it is standing directly behind the meadow. He used a series of exposures to create the desired ratio between foreground and background. This enabled him to clearly emphasize both the decorative clouds and the architectural details of the façade.

Chrysanthemum

A chrysanthemum in the macro shot unfolds in front of a dark background and allows its fine details to stand out clearly. The radial alignment of the petals has a symmetry that creates an almost graphic effect. Photographer Ursula Schindlbeck reports that the flower reminds her of fireworks and that she therefore staged it against a dark background. For the shot, she placed the plant on a table and used a camera and tripod to create a stacked image from fifteen individual shots at an aperture of 4.0 and ISO 200.

Simssee in the morning

Several sailing boats lie calmly on the mirror-smooth Simssee, their masts clearly reflected in the water. The boats with their red, yellow and blue set colorful contrasts in an otherwise muted scenery.

Photographer Thomas Becher reports: "The photo was taken on August 31 at 6:30 a.m. from a jetty on Lake Simssee near Stephanskirchen. The boats were turning slightly in the current. To smooth out the water, I used an ND16 with which I got 2 seconds and the boats were just barely blurred. 15 minutes later, the sun rose spectacularly behind the hills and the fog disappeared."

Rather a rich man rides a camel than the eye of a needle enters the sky

A heavily decorated iron gate opens onto a corridor that looks like a cage made of metal bars. The strong yellow coloring makes the scene appear both artificially heightened and mysterious, almost as if from another world. The sacred architecture combines splendor and narrowness – an entrance that creates more distance than inviting.

Wahner Heide at sunrise

This shot by gallery photographer Cathos captures the Wahner Heide at a particularly atmospheric moment, namely at sunrise. The golden light bathes the heathland in warm colors, while the violet-colored flowers and grasses glow in high contrast. In the middle ground of the picture, a single tree sets a striking accent and lends structure and depth to the scene. The wide-open landscape conveys a sense of tranquillity that is typical of this large nature reserve near Cologne.

Mantis

A flowering mantis of the genus Pseudocreobotra is elegantly enthroned on a branch and presents its sculptural silhouette. The spines on its back give the insect a defensive appearance, while the fine markings on its body are almost ornamental. The delicate contours stand out particularly clearly against the soft, golden-yellow background. The delicate, violet eyes form a fascinating color accent and draw the eye directly into the animal's 'face'.
