Friday afternoon, 3:15 p.m.: It's just over an hour after the start of pre-orders for the new iPhone 17 generation when we begin our spot check in Apple's online store. Which iPhones are particularly popular with pre-order customers? Interested parties were able to place their orders worldwide from 2 pm. With one exception: Apple postponed the pre-order start for the iPhone Air in China at short notice.
The German online store quickly identified a presumed favorite among buyers: The iPhone 17 Pro Max is – only available with a delivery time of three to four weeks, regardless of the color and memory configuration –. On the other hand, the biggest new product in the line-up is the surprising slow seller on pre-order day: at the time of the review, the iPhone Air is still available with delivery on the first day of sale on September 19, with one exception. Only the Cloud White version is estimated to take seven to ten working days to be delivered.
Delivery times not without ifs and buts
The situation is mixed for the iPhone 17: only the fog blue version with 256 GB of memory is still available on the first day of sale. Otherwise, it will take seven to ten working days at best (lavender, 256 GB) or even two to three weeks (lavender, 512 GB) before Apple can deliver.

The look at delivery times, which has become a tradition in many media, is of course not without ifs and buts. Firstly, it is unclear how many devices Apple has in stock for which variant and how different the production times are. Secondly, the majority of pre-order customers are likely to be buyers who are more enthusiastic about technology than lifestyle, which is why an iPhone Air may have a harder time with this target group than in the stores afterwards.
iPhone Air postponed in China
In China, however, some would be happy if they could order the Air. According to a report in the South China Morning Post, Apple had to postpone the start of pre-orders there at short notice. The reason: the regulatory authorities have not yet fully agreed to the decision not to use a plastic SIM card. Instead, the device only works with an eSIM. In China, the electronic version of the SIM card has so far not been welcomed and is hardly supported by the network operators.
