MĂĽnchen Klinik and Klinikum Ebersberg have launched the "TelEmergency Baby" pilot project. It aims to improve emergency care for newborn babies via telemedicine. If complications arise during a birth in Ebersberg, midwives and doctors can access a video consultation with an emergency team from Munich's neonatal intensive care unit (neonatology) within a few minutes. They will guide the team on site in stabilizing measures and thus support initial care.

According to the clinics, newborns also benefit from specialized care when there are no paediatricians on site. As a rule, mother, and child can remain in Ebersberg; if a transfer is necessary, a handover is prepared. Further obstetrics locations are to be integrated in the future. According to those responsible, around 15 clinics with around 10,000 births per year would be suitable for expansion in Bavaria. Specialists from the neonatology department at the Munich Harlaching Clinic are currently providing assistance. According to the Munich clinic, the neonatology department at MĂĽnchen Klinik Schwabing will also be involved in telemedical care in the future.

"Although complications in newborns are rare, they can become life-threatening within a few minutes. Thanks to the telemedical connection, we can provide immediate support and initiate the right steps; the on-site training and the resulting trusting cooperation between the teams are important here. This means significantly greater safety for the children and enormous support for the teams on site," say project manager and senior consultant in neonatalogy, Dr. Christian Brickmann and Prof. Dr. Marcus KrĂĽger, Head of Neonatology at the Munich Clinic.

The Kreisklinik Ebersberg and MĂĽnchen Klinik Schwabing launched a similar concept for pediatric emergency care at the beginning of the year. The "TelEmergency Kids" project enables video calls with pediatric emergency physicians from MĂĽnchen Klinik Schwabing when children are admitted to the emergency room in Ebersberg. The aim is to close gaps in care, avoid unnecessary transfers and relieve the burden on parents and hospital staff. According to MĂĽnchen Kliniken, experience from existing telemedicine projects, such as stroke care, will be incorporated.
