Spotify is expanding the scope for users of the free version. Users now have more control over what they want to listen to, the streaming provider announced on Monday.

Users of the free subscription can now click on any song and listen to it. They can find songs using the search function, listen to them immediately and share them. Another feature that was previously only available to paying customers is the creation of playlists. You can also create playlists and add songs without paying. An algorithm then suggests additional songs that might match the tastes of the person in question.

Playlist covers can now also be designed using photos, colours, text or graphic elements. It doesn't matter whether the customer uses iOS or Android. According to Spotify, you first have to click on the three dots in your own playlist and then on the "create cover art" option. However, only one cover can be created per playlist; each additional cover replaces the previous one.

Another new feature is called "Daylist". These lists record the times of day or days of the week when the user listens to which type of music. It updates itself automatically and adapts to the user's preferences. For example, if users are looking for songs that specifically match their mood during morning exercise, the daylist suggests something for them. Daylists can also be saved and copied.

In the new "discover weekly" playlist, users can find weekly song recommendations based on their listening habits. The "release radar" also shows the latest tracks from artists that customers follow.

There are also changes to the song lyrics. If you are listening to a song with available lyrics, you can swipe up from the bottom of the "Now playing" view to display the lyrics. These run while the song is playing. Lyrics can also be shared via the app.
