Disney is investing in a new comic subscription: In collaboration with Webtoon, Disney wants to build a new comic platform that includes digital editions of Disney comics from the Marvel, Star Wars and 20th Century Studios portfolios. The two companies have now announced this in a joint press release, having already held out the prospect of a collaboration last month.
According to the announcement, 35,000 digital comics from Disney will be bundled on this comic platform. Disney already offers a subscription for English-language digital comics with Marvel Unlimited, which includes 30,000 comics and costs 10 US dollars per month. Disney wants the new platform to be considered an extension of Marvel Unlimited. It remains to be seen whether this will be accompanied by price changes.
Disney has also not provided any information on a possible international launch of the upcoming comic platform. It is not known whether translated comic editions will also be available there. Subscribers to Disney's streaming service will even be able to access a selection of curated comics at no extra charge via the Disney+ Perks program. However, this Perks program is not available in Germany.

"By bringing together our unique collection of comics from Marvel, Star Wars, Disney, Pixar and 20th Century Studios on a single digital platform, we are offering fans unprecedented access to the adventures they love," comments Disney manager Josh D'Amaro on the cooperation. He hopes that this will attract new target groups and strengthen fan loyalty.
As part of the collaboration, Disney intends to buy two percent of Webtoon's shares, both companies also announced. A non-binding agreement has already been signed, but the exact details have yet to be negotiated.
