According to its statements, Tesla is planning a slimmed-down version of the Model Y. A security researcher claims to have discovered exactly what these cutbacks might look like in Tesla's firmware.
The cheaper model would no longer have heating for the rearview camera, he writes under the pseudonym “Green” on X. The audio system would be reduced to an essential package. There would be no air vents for the center console. The glass roof, tire pressure monitoring systems, and power-folding mirrors would also be omitted. The electric seat adjustments will be limited to a single axis of movement. Ambient lighting will also be omitted. Other possible restrictions include:
- Simplified front end
- Simplified interior lighting (footwell only)
- No glass roof
- No tire pressure monitoring system
- Simplified chassis components
- Simplified 18-inch wheels
- No display in the second row of seats
- No door lighting
- Simplified fiberglass headliner

According to the tech portal Electrek, which has been following plans for an affordable Tesla model for some time, Tesla originally wanted to develop a new model with a purchase price below the $25,000 mark but then decided instead to slim down an existing model. The company had already taken a similar approach in Mexico, where the Tesla 3 was also launched with a few cutbacks. For example, in Mexico, it had fabric seats instead of leather seats.
