M.2 adapter squeezes mini SSD into the official Raspi 5 housing
The M.2 HAT+ Compact for the Raspberry Pi piggybacks small 30 mm SSDs. The whole thing fits next to the official CPU cooler.

Raspberry Pi Plc. is launching a compact SSD adapter for the Raspberry Pi 5 single-board computer. The highlight: The additional board fits between the USB ports and the official CPU cooler. This means that interested parties can continue to use the official Raspi 5 housing. Previous adapters are too high and require a housing from third-party manufacturers – Chinese suppliers in particular have numerous variants on offer, including with RGB lighting and OLED displays.
The so-called M.2 HAT+ Compact costs just under 15 euros. On the downside, the compact design requires an M.2 SSD, which may only be 30 mm short (M.2 2230). Corresponding models are pricier than the typical 80 mm cards due to their niche existence. The adapter is therefore useful for anyone who wants to make their Raspi 5 as compact as possible and still use a fast SSD.

Already available
The two German retailers Berrybase and Reichelt already have the M.2 HAT+ Compact in stock. The adapter cannot yet be found in price comparisons.
The Raspi manufacturer itself is one of the few companies to sell a 30 mm SSD with 256 GB capacity (starting from 32,90 €). This model is the cheapest 30 mm SSD in the price comparison. For most DIY projects, 256 GB should be sufficient. Kingston currently sells the cheapest M.2-2230 SSDs with 500 GByte (starting from 69,95 €) and one TByte capacity (starting from 63,89 €).

If you buy a 30 mm SSD for the Raspi 5 now, you can also use the data carrier with other hardware in the future: All M.2 SSDs use the same M.2 M-Key connection type, regardless of their length. The 2230 format is otherwise primarily used in handheld PCs, which do not have enough space for longer SSDs.
