Microsoft has confirmed that the update for Windows 11 from 29 August (KB5064081) causes an error when playing DVDs or Blu-rays as well as digital TV applications. You could also be affected if you have installed version KB506542, which was released in September 2025, or a later update.
According to Microsoft, some videos may exhibit “stuttering.” Users may also experience “frequent interruptions during playback, freezing, or black screens” when watching videos, and copy protection errors may also occur. However, this problem has no impact on streaming services. According to the company, the issue only impacts digital TV and DVD apps.

Specifically, the error is said to occur in apps that are based on the “Enhanced Video Renderer” component with HDCP enforcement or Digital Rights Management (DRM). Microsoft classifies the “Enhanced Video Renderer” as legacy software that has been replaced by the “Simple Video Renderer” (SVR), which is available via the “MediaPlayer” and “IMFMediaEngine” components. Apparently, some apps are still using the legacy engine, but Microsoft does not specify which ones are involved.

Users who notice these errors on their devices will have to be patient: Microsoft is currently working on fixing the issue with a future Windows 11 update. The company will provide further information as soon as a solution is available. Until then, affected users will have to use other playback devices for DVDs and Blu-rays or rely on streaming services until further notice. Older Windows 10 and 11 versions do not appear to be impacted.
This is not the first issue that has occurred with Windows 11 updates in recent weeks. The updates for Windows that Microsoft distributed on Patchday in August also caused unexpected issues under several versions of Windows. Among other things, attempts to reset or restore affected devices after installing the August update failed. SSD issues under Windows also caused headaches.
