Logitech dares to try a solar keyboard again after 15 years

The Signature Slim Solar+ K980 also charges its battery with artificial light. Wired battery charging should hardly ever be necessary.

Logitech presents its second keyboard with built-in photovoltaic technology: the 15-year-old Wireless Solar Keyboard K750 is now followed by the Signature Slim Solar+ K980.

Once again, there is a solar panel on the top that charges the internal battery. According to Logitech, this should also work reliably with artificial light, for example from a monitor or ceiling light. Unlike the first attempt, the solar module is inconspicuous – the surface looks like rough plastic.

Meanwhile, the battery is large enough for the keyboard to run for four months with normal use, even without any light at all. If you do want to fully charge the battery, you can do so via USB-C.

The solar module at the top of the keyboard almost looks like a plastic shelf.

The design has largely remained the same. Logitech relies on a full-key layout, including the numeric keypad and F-keys. New are three buttons to easily switch the wireless connection between three devices. As before, the Signature Slim Solar+ K980 supports Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz connections via USB dongle. It can also switch between Windows/Linux and macOS key layouts.

The Signature Slim Solar+ K980 is a so-called 100 per cent keyboard with all the usual keys.

Another new feature is a button that opens a menu with various AI assistants ex works. If you don't need this, you can remap the key in Logitech's software.

The typing feel is typical of a flat keyboard with a so-called rubber dome structure. If you like the typing feel of a notebook, you should quickly become friends with the Signature Slim Solar+ K980.
