With the FE 100 mm F2.8 Macro GM OSS, Sony has introduced a macro in the medium telephoto range within the renowned G-Master series. Until now, only two macrofixed focal lengths of 50 and 90 millimeters were available for the E-mount, each with an aperture of f/2.8. The manufacturer is now advertising the versatility of the new lens. With its outstanding optical performance, it should not only be a good choice for macro photographers but also for portrait and wedding photographers, as it promises excellent sharpness as well as beautiful bokeh.
Optical design for maximum imaging performance

The magnification of 1.4:1 exceeds the classic 1:1 standard of conventional macro lenses. In combination with an optional 2x teleconverter, the lens even achieves a scale of 2.8:1, allowing photographers to capture structures and details that are normally hidden from the human eye. With a close focusing distance of 26 centimeters, it is possible to photograph with the largest image scale and remain outside the flight distance of insects and other animals.
The excellent image quality expected of the G-Master series is ensured by an elaborate optical design with 17 lenses in 13 groups. Two extremely aspherical lenses (XA) and two ED glass elements (Extra-low Dispersion) correct chromatic aberrations and ensure high-resolution right to the edges of the image. A newly developed focussing system with four XD (Extreme Dynamic) linear motors enables up to 1.9 times faster and quieter autofocus compared to the manufacturer's previous models.
Another special feature is the integrated optical image stabilizer (OSS), which interacts with the camera's sensor stabilization and has been specially optimized for the requirements of macro photography. The system not only compensates for typical tilting and panning movements but also for translational camera shake (X-Y shift), which is particularly critical at close range. This should significantly increase the success rate for freehand shots.
The lens offers several professional functions for precise and flexible focussing. The “Full-time DMF” mode allows manual intervention in the autofocus at any time. A dedicated AF/MF switch enables the focus mode to be changed quickly. The lens also has a focus ring with a clutch mechanism; by moving the ring, it is possible to switch directly between autofocus and manual focus, allowing intuitive control over sharpness and image scale.

Eleven aperture blades are designed to ensure an almost circular aperture opening and therefore a pleasing bokeh. The aperture can be controlled both via the camera and via an aperture ring. The click function can be deactivated, for example, for video recordings, and the selected aperture can be fixed.
Availability and price
The FE 100 mm F2.8 Macro GM OSS is expected to be available from November at a recommended retail price of 1600 Euro.
