There is currently a fault with IBM's file system. Those affected include those insured by the eleven AOKs, Techniker Krankenkasse and Barmer, Viactiv, and Knappschaft, as Gematik also reports on its WhatsApp channel. According to Gematik, “there may currently be impairments in the use of electronic patient records” in doctors' surgeries and clinics.

Doctors had actually hoped for a “not too bumpy” mandatory start for the electronic patient record (ePA). “In the current healthcare situation, we can't afford to take the functionality of the EPR into consideration. This is now a real test of how well the digitalization of the healthcare system works in Germany,” says Dr. Norbert Smetak, Chairman of MEDI GENO Deutschland e. V. and cardiologist in private practice.

There are regular disruptions to the telematics infrastructure, which also impact e-prescriptions, much to the chagrin of pharmacies. Federal Health Minister Nina Warken had already promised to ensure greater stability with further digital laws.

Doctors and pharmacists also have to contend with other obstacles. “The KBV's latest survey has shown that around 40 percent of practices are still dissatisfied with the technical implementation of the ePA. We will monitor this closely and evaluate it further,” says Smetak. MEDI is planning to conduct a detailed survey on the use of the ePA in two months' time. For example, some doctors and pharmacists currently seem to be experiencing incompatibilities and problems with the procurement of TI components. It is possible that a small proportion of doctors will not have up-to-date software and hardware at the beginning of the year, with the threat of penalties from January.
