With OSISM 10.x, the SCS community (Sovereign Cloud Stack) has released a new version of its OpenStack distribution. Among other things, it brings improved hardware management that allows administrators to create configurations for new systems—primarily network hardware—more easily.

OSISM is now using OpenStack 2025.1 (“Epoxy”) on the virtualization layer. Upgrades from the previous version should work flawlessly; for the first time, a version jump is also possible, for example, directly from OSISM 8.x (with OpenStack 2024.1 “Caracal”) to 10.x without having to go through 9.x (2024.2 “Dalmatian”) first. Another new feature is extended support for PCI cards that have been passed through. Live migrations are now possible in more scenarios, which should pay off for AI workloads in particular. The current “Reef” version of Ceph is now also used.

OSISM now uses Ubuntu 24.04 LTS as its standard operating system, both on the machines themselves and in the node images provided for the container environment. This improves hardware support, especially for graphics accelerators, which are increasingly required for AI applications. Users also benefit from the latest kernel features, such as eBPF support, which is used in Cilium for container networks, among other things.

The latest editions of the Kubernetes Cluster API and the OpenStack Cluster API Provider are also on board. SCS R9 supports Kubernetes 1.33.x, which brings improvements in scalability, token management, and pod handling, among other things. The community is also working on further improvements to the platform's performance and federability. Further details can be found in the release announcement.
