Vienna-based Proxmox Server Solutions GmbH has updated its open source platform for secure e-mail with Proxmox Mail Gateway 9.0. Like the virtualisation solution Proxmox VE 9.0 and the Proxmox Backup Server 4.0, the Mail Gateway is based on Debian GNU/Linux 13.0 "Trixie". While Debian uses a Linux kernel 6.12 LTS as standard, the Proxmox development team has opted for a customised Linux kernel 6.14.11-2.

The ZFS file system has just published the second release candidate for version 2.4 (zfs-2.4.0-rc2), but Proxmox relies on the latest stable ZFS version 2.3.4. PostgreSQL 17 is used as the database engine. Open source technologies such as ClamAV 1.4.3 and SpamAssassin 4.0.2 with updated rulesets are designed to protect against spam, viruses, Trojans, and phishing emails.

The new quarantine interface has been specially optimised for mobile devices and allows users to conveniently manage their quarantined messages via a redesigned web interface. Developed with the Rust-based Yew framework, it is intended to replace the previous implementation completely.

The authentication functions and SSO integration (single sign-on) have been significantly expanded: OpenID Connect realms can now be fully configured via the graphical user interface, including claim assignments and automatic role allocation. This enables a seamless connection to common identity and access management solutions such as Keycloak, Zitadel or LemonLDAP::NG.

The adaptation of the content type filter engine, which can recognise and block updated MIME types for Microsoft execution files more reliably, is intended to achieve greater security.
