Instagram has now activated the location sharing function announced in August for users in Germany. The feature, which is an alternative to services such as Snap Map, was initially only launched in the USA.
As Instagram already explained when announcing the function, this is not live tracking in real time. Instead, the last known location is only updated when the user opens the app or returns to it. After 24 hours, the location on the Instagram map disappears again.
Location sharing is deactivated by default and must be explicitly activated by each user. To achieve this, users can go to “Settings and activities” under “Story and location” and click on “Share location.”
At the top right of the map, you can see whether the location is shared. The blue arrow means that the location is shared; a red arrow or an orange triangle means that it is not. In the latter case, the location permissions must first be activated.

According to Instagram, users retain control over who they share their location with. Sharing can be done for all “friends,” “close friends,” “only these friends,” or no one. The function can also be specifically deactivated for certain locations or contacts. Parents can control the location sharing of teenagers and are notified when their child shares their location.
