Once a month, Google releases a new version of the system update for Android. The update brings new functions to smartphones and other products in the Google ecosystem, such as tablets, watches, smart TVs, Android Auto, and Chromebooks, without the need for a regular Android update from the device manufacturer.
They are distributed directly from Google via the Play services; the Play Store and Play system updates to these device categories. Some functions are aimed at end users, others at developers. According to the release notes for the October update, version 25.39 of the Google Play services released on 6 October brings new features for account management and security functions.
Nudity detection in Messages app for videos
The new Play Services version also extends the optional “Sensitive Content Warnings” function in the Google Messages app on devices with Android 9 and newer. Previously, the app could only scan photos for nudity and display a corresponding warning. Now Google Messages can also recognize explicit nude images in shared videos. Google emphasizes that no content is uploaded; according to Google, the necessary image recognition takes place exclusively on the respective device itself via the “Android System SafetyCore” service.

The “Do not disturb” mode when driving will also offer more safety in the future. Google does not explain exactly what is new, but the mode has been “improved.”
New features for account management
According to Google, the Play Services update also brings the quick start function to accounts with parental control. The version also brings new designs for the parental control functions. The profile picture has also been given a new design, writes Google.
For developers, version 25.39 of the Play services brings new functions for Google and third-party apps. These are intended to support account management as well as security and data protection-related processes in apps.
Play Store update
In addition to the Play services, the Play Store app is also receiving an update. The new version will be distributed for smartphones and tablets as well as for cars, TVs, ChromeOS, and watches. However, the new features in version 48.3 are nowhere near as big as the update from September, with which Google added the “My Play” tab to its marketplace. This is an individually curated area, primarily for games. The October version only has updated icons for Google Play Protect notifications.

The updates will be installed automatically over time. If you want to have the updates on your device as quickly as possible, you can update the Play services in the settings either under “Software updates” or “About phone” > “Android version” > “Google Play system update,” depending on the manufacturer. The Play Store itself can be updated manually in the Store settings under “Info.”
With the September update of the Play services, Google introduced the option for Pixel smartphones to connect two headphones to one device at the same time. LE Audio Auracast is used for this.
